4th June 2023 – Holy Trinity Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

Thank you to all who celebrated our climax to the Easter Celebrations – “Pentecost”. Numbers were low, but we celebrated well! With the lovely sunshine in this past week, I have been reminiscing on my eleven years of ministering & living in Bexhill, where the sea front was the same distance from me as the Royal Holloway University is now! There was nothing I enjoyed more than a lovely walk by the seafront, sometimes stopping at “Di Paolo’s” for a beautiful Gluten Free handmade gelato (ice cream).

Many years back, I was walking along a sandy part of Bexhill Seafront with two priest friends. We were in discussion (inspired by the vast greatness of the Sea). We were talking about the mystery, awe and wonder of God. If the truth be known, we were also exploring ideas for our Sunday homily – Trinity Sunday was fast approaching! As it was a hot day (and we were enjoying our ice-creams) our conversation wasn’t getting very far. We caught sight of a small boy. Like me (at his age) he had dug a huge hole in the sand with his spade and kept running down to the water’s edge to fill his plastic red bucket with water and then take it back to empty it into the hole. We stopped and watched in amusement, our cool ice creams in hand. He spotted us and recognised me! One of my friends smiled and asked what he was doing. His Mum smiled too as her son seriously told us that he was emptying the ocean into his hole!

As we walked on, we tried to continue to prepare our minds for the Sunday Homily, keen to inspire our congregations (I was very conscientious in those days)! One of my friends hit the nail on the head, “You know that we were amused at what that child was trying to do; isn’t that just what we were doing in our discussion about God? It is just as impossible for us to fully understand the mystery of God as it is for the child to put the water of the sea into that hole. Our minds are like tiny thimbles, whereas the reality of God is greater than the mighty ocean.” “So profound”, I thought, “the mystery of God is so full of meaning that we will never finish our task, as we continue to grow in knowledge, wonder and awe!”

Dear friends, parishioners, First Communion families, Baptism families, Newly Confirmed – let us never be lazy or superficial in our efforts to understand the mystery and greatness of God. May we continue to be filled with the Holy Spirit and let us continue to journey forward boldly and in love. Happy Trinity Sunday!

May we say to God …

“To you glory and praise for evermore …”

CORPUS CHRISTI

The gift of the Body and Blood of Christ is indeed a great gift to the Church. Jesus is our true and eternal Priest, who instituted the pattern of an everlasting sacrifice and was the first to offer himself as the saving Victim., commanding us to make this offering as his memorial. As we eat his flesh that was sacrificed for us, we are made strong (in His love), and as we drink his Blood that was poured out for us, we are washed clean. (CF Preface 1 of the Most Holy Eucharist). May our celebration next weekend be worthy of Christ’s great gift to the Church.

Fri 9th June Wintershall CIO seeks a Qualified Teacher to join their Education Programme. So many people are struggling in our locality and parish (as well as globally). It is important to keep our mental health in check. Thank you for the continued support to the Runnymede Food Bank, with items being left each week at the back of our churches. 28th May 2023 – Pentecost Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

This past week, I have been back to school with the Bishop and Diocesan Clergy on our annual overnight In-Service-Training. It is always lovely to catch up with brother priests and seek to share and grow together. That is the heart of what we are about as a church – witnesses to the life, death and resurrection of Christ called to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and show forth the fruits of the Holy Spirit – sharing and growing!

I love having a go at different languages (even if only a few words or phrases)! I not only try speaking the language but seek to be culturally aware too. The children at St Cuthbert’s Primary enjoy singing “Our God is a great big God”. That is good theology. I would like to write my own version called “Our Church is a great big Church”. That would be good ecclesiology. We are made up of many different cultures, traditions, backgrounds and ways of life. We celebrate the birthday of the Church today, with joy, with hope and (hopefully) a heartfelt desire to play our part!

God’s Spirit is here in the heart of our parish community, it is present in the worldwide Church, and it is here in our locality. We give thanks for the many gifts, and diversity of gifts, that we witness and share, and the many ways people build up the life of the community.

Today, we (God’s adopted children) renew our gift of the Holy Spirit. We become united with God’s Only Begotten Son. We celebrate the Church coming to birth, opening to all peoples the knowledge of God and bringing together the many languages of the earth in profession of the one faith.

“God’s Spirit is in my heart,

He has called me and set me apart –

this is what I have to do…

(What is the Holy Spirit calling me to do?

Where is the Spirit leading me?)

Send forth your spirit, O Lord,

and renew the face of the earth.

The new location is now ready to welcome our young readers! We have also prepared cloth bags containing toys and religious-themed books for our youngest participants. Parents, please feel free to take a bag for your child’s enjoyment during Mass, and kindly return the bags afterward.

Thank you for your helping make mass a joyful and enriching experience for our little ones.

31ST ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY

Wed 31st May We celebrate Fr Chris’ 31st Ordination Anniversary today and everyone is welcome to join us after mass for some coffee and cake for this lovely milestone.

CONSOLATION & BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT

Our support group is here to listen, offer support, prayers and friendship to those people and families recently bereaved. We are also here for those who may be looking after a loved one who is suffering from a terminal illness. EDDIE HOPKINS

“Many of you will remember Eddie, who joined our parish on a pastoral placement. He has now been formally called for ordination to the diaconate, prior to his priesthood ordination. I am delighted for him. I knew him as a friendly and devoted parishioner in the previous parish I served. Please keep him in prayer as his big day looms in June! I know that he will be a great gift to the diocese.” Fr Chris

POST COVID – SIGN OF PEACE /

COMMUNION UNDER BOTH KINDS

If you were away last weekend, everyone was reminded about the possibility of the Sign of Peace either by (1) the shaking of the hand or (2) placing your hands together and giving a reverend nod and bow. Making your intention clear should prevent confusion, and we urge that you still respect those being careful with infection control for whatever reason.

Our total Mass attendance was only 293 across three Masses. Everyone was asked at the three Masses “do you feel ready to return to the reception of the chalice.” Those who declared “yes” were 39 (13%). 87% are not quite ready yet. We will provide a simple option somewhere in the near future and provide some catechesis on receiving from the chalice.

You receive the fullness of Christ’s presence in His Body or in His Blood, there is no pressure to receive under both kinds.

BICYCLE RACK FOR CHURCH

AND JURGENS CENTRE

With the continued desire for parishes to reflect the great challenge of preserving our environment we are keen to support our cyclists. Some individuals and families cycle to Mass or activities in the Jurgen’s Centre. For a church and parish car park we should be providing a good and safe provision for cycle parking. Please contact the parish office if you know of any second hand cycle racks and / or if you have information on the suitability (and safety) of different designs.

GOOD COMMUNICATION

Following on from last weekend’s “Communication Sunday” please in communicating with Fr Chris, or the Parish Office, include as much by way of contact details with any email / message. The new database is not yet set up and greater detail means we can get back to you quicker.

For example with Fr Chris, deducting junk-emails and junk-post, Fr Chris, in a given week, receives about 60 emails, 9 post messages, 10 phone messages from the parish alone. He has face to face meetings (at the presbytery and other locations) and phone / zoom appointments too. Please make return contact as simple as possible. He has new commitments for the diocese and deanery and continues to support our schools.

BAPTISM PREPARATION

Please note: We are looking for some new catechists for Baptism Preparation, if you feel you may be able to assist, please have a word with Fr Chris. We have sessions 3 times a year.

TEACHING OPPORTUNITY

Wintershall CIO seeks a Qualified Teacher to join their Education Programme. The ideal candidate will provide creative Gospel story experiences to children and teachers, share Wintershall’s belief in the importance of understanding the Christian story, and contribute to program development.

28th May 2023 – Pentecost Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

21st May 2023 – 7th Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

It was wonderful to welcome our First Holy Communion families last weekend for the extremely important theme looking at the Eucharist, Thanksgiving in its broadest sense, and the Eucharistic prayer. Thank you for sharing with us all in the parish. It was also lovely to see so many from our parish family across our three Masses on Thursday too as Jesus ascended to heaven. He called us to make all peoples “disciples of all the nations” remaining with us until the end of time. “I will not leave you orphans, says the Lord; I will come back to you and your hearts will be full of joy”. We now await our great celebration of Pentecost!

In our spiritual life, we all need the help of the Holy Spirit. With a strong willpower and enthusiasm, we can do so much. All great artists are aware of their need for inspiration. Without God’s grace I am / we are powerless in our spiritual life. To give time and energy to God, we need a strength we ourselves do not possess. Yet we live in a do-it-yourself society. We often pay lip service to others, but we are more interested in our own path and ideologies. Even in our Faith Life we can ask “what is in it for me?”

During Christ’s life, the disciples felt brave, strong, virtuous and generous. During the passion they learned some uncomfortable things about themselves. They recognised that they were cowardly, afraid, selfish and weak. But Christ had foreseen this. He knew their need for help and strength and hence asked them to wait for the Holy Spirit. Then with the help of the Holy Spirit they would have their tools to go out and preach the good news. Their weakness would be a strength; it would leave them open to the Holy Spirit, and ready for any pains or hardships on the journey ahead.

Many of us have had experiences that have opened us up to our weaknesses. Sometimes we can feel powerless in our own needs, or those we dearly want to reach out to in real and tangible ways. Some have had illness (both of body and mind), or a brush with death, many of us have lost someone we love. Like the disciples in the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost; we too are called to pray, to prepare and be ready to spring into action, when Pentecost day comes. We are to carry on the work of Jesus, in our broken and needy world. Just as Jesus prayed for his followers to continue his work; so, he prays for us too. May we be renewed and transformed for the journey ahead.

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living.

SAINT CUTHBERT’S SCHOOL

Staff, pupils, parents, grandparents and parishioners had a lovely celebration of The Ascension last Thursday at the school. Thank you to all who were involved. On Tuesday Fr Chris will be celebrating a Mass for some of the year groups, before heading off for his 48-hour in-service. Then it is half term, starting with our wonderful celebration of Pentecost – 27th & 28th May.

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY

Sat 20th – Sun 21st May. This year’s World Communications Day is celebrated this weekend. The theme comes from Ephesians 4:15, Speaking with the heart – ‘The truth in love’. In his message to mark the day, Pope Francis stresses the need to listen before speaking truth with a pure heart to “see beyond appearances and overcome the vague din which, in the field of information, does not help us discern in the complicated world in which we live.”

The Holy Father, warning against indifference and indignation, hails the example of the great Doctor of the Church, St Francis de Sales, in particular his commitment to patient, heartfelt dialogue. A gifted theologian, his phrase ‘Heart speaks to heart’ inspired many, none more so than the recently canonised Saint John Henry Newman, who chose the phrase as his cardinalatial motto, ‘Cor ad cor loquitur’. Catholics in England and Wales will remember with affection that ‘Heart speaks unto heart’ was also the theme for Pope Benedict XVI’s historic visit to the UK in 2010. You will find information, resources, prayers and more on the Bishops’ Conference website: www.cbcew.org.uk/world-communications-day

POPE FRANCIS’ SPECIAL MESSAGE

This is a Sunday too, to give thanks for all who are involved in communication in our parish.

MISSIONARY ENDEAVOUR

OF THE DIOCESE

Last weekend we were due a second collection for our twin diocese in Peru. Unfortunately this was not taken at our first two Masses and we therefore decided to postpone the collection at the third Mass too. We will now take this collection on 22nd / 23rd July. Many years ago, our Diocese was twinned with the Diocese of Chulucanas in Peru and (when Priests were more plentiful), we sent priests from our Diocese to theirs to assist in their mission over large areas bringing the Sacraments to remote places and supporting the catechists in their work with local communities. We still support their work today financially and in prayer.

CONSOLATION & BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT

As a parish, we want to try and do everything we can to help you through a difficult and sometimes painful time.

Our support group is here to listen, offer support, prayers and friendship to those people and families recently bereaved. We are also here for those who may be looking after a loved one who is suffering from a terminal illness. If you wish to talk to us, please contact the Parish Office on 01784 477620 or email parishofegham and one of us will contact you.

GIFT AID ENVELOPE BOXES

Please ensure you collect your new boxes of gift aid envelopes from the porch of the Assumption. Please get in touch with Alice Moore if you would like your box left for you at the St John of Rochester Church. Email annual gift statements were sent out on the 23rd April from

giftaidnotifications Please check your junk mail if you haven’t received this. For those without email addresses, letters will be posted to you by the end of May.

RUNNYMEDE FOODBANK

There were two weeks of donations and, thanks to some very generous donors, we delivered 58kg (9st) to the local foodbank in Egham. Here is the list of essential items needed for the month of May:

Long Life Milk – Coffee – Sponge Pudding – Tinned Fruit – Tinned Vegetables – Jam – Instant Mash – Antibacterial Spray – Shaving Foam – Conditioner – Deodorant – Toothpaste – Washing Up Liquid – Dog Food

The donations from our parish help local families in crisis. The boxes for donations are at the back of our churches. Thank you for your generosity.

PARISH MASS BOOKS

For those who wish, please feel free to take a set of the six Sunday Mass books for year A, B and C. These can be used for preparing for Mass or re-reading after Mass, tying us in with the liturgical theme. The volume and page are on the front of the newsletter each week. A donation will be most welcome, but please bear in mind that a new translation of the readings is in preparation and the books will therefore devalue!

CONFIRMATION THANKS

We would like to say a huge thank you to Renata, Regina, Tom, Alex and all the other parishioners who gave up their valuable time to prepare our children (and us as their parents) for the sacrament of Confirmation. We really appreciate how much time and effort went into strengthening the faith of the candidates and getting them ready for what turned out to be a very special occasion at Arundel Cathedral!

BAPTISM PREPARATION

Please note: We are looking for some new catechists for Baptism Preparation, if you feel you may be able to assist, please have a word with Fr Chris. We have sessions 3 times a year.

14th May 2023 – 6th Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

Welcome to our First Holy Communion children and families. Like you, I am very excited about your celebrations and your ongoing journey of faith.

As a parish, I need you; we need you. You are all valuable and precious both in God’s sight, and to the whole community! I was delighted to read Justin’s words in our Children’s Newsletter for this month. “First Holy Communion … teaches us valuable lessons about forgiveness, community, faith, and prayer…. We’re not alone in our faith journey, and we can help each other by being kind and doing good things for others…going to Mass is an important way to show our love for Him”.

Saying “thank you” is important. My parents always reminded me of the importance of appreciation, and I used to write thank you letters and draw pictures to show my appreciation to others. I am aware that I probably don’t say “thank you” often enough in the parish, as appreciation is a real community builder. In our busy and rushed world it seems to me that taking time for thanksgiving can all too easily get squeezed out. At mass we give thanks to God – we are united – we belong here – all are welcome. We pray together. In the Eucharistic prayer, we remember all that Jesus did for us and we are thankful. At the last supper Jesus took the gifts and gave thanks and everyone shared the gift. In the same way, I believe strongly in praying and giving thanks before a meal. After we receive Holy Communion (and especially on First Communion Day) our prayer should be “thank you Jesus”. Jesus comes to us and gives himself for us as a real, generous and sacrificial gift.

On Thursday we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension (please note the Mass times). Today, in our Gospel, Jesus speaks words of reassurance; he is aware of the human pain of taking leave of those we love. “Continue to love me and keep my commandments” he pleads. “My Father will give you another advocate to be with you forever” he re-assures them. “I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you” he insists. Jesus will be with his first followers in a new kind of way, just as he still comes to us in the Sacraments.

In Holy Communion, we have access to Jesus’ real presence with the help of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is not present as a vague memory, or a person who lived long ago, but as a life-giving and transformative presence. He nourishes us with his love. The food of the Eucharist gives us the strength to do his work, to live his word, and to be his disciples. Jesus will not abandon us but enables us to build God’s Kingdom in a new way with the Holy Spirit to help us.

Cry out with joy to God all the earth.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

13th / 14th May Missionary Endeavour of the Diocese Many years ago, our Diocese was twinned with the Diocese of Chulucanas in Peru and (when Priests were more plentiful), we sent priests from our Diocese to theirs to assist in their mission over large areas bringing the Sacraments to remote places and supporting the catechists in their work with local communities. We still support their work today financially and in prayer. Please give generously.

20th / 21st May World Communications Sunday This collection supports the work of the Catholic Communication Network. Positive communication and the enabling of the written word and the publication of materials, in paper form and online, to speak of the wonderful faith we share and enable evangelisation and invigoration are so important at this time, where apathy and lapsation seems to be on the increase.

This is also a Sunday to give thanks for all who are involved in communication in our parish.

LOCAL ELECTIONS

Two weeks ago on “Good Shepherd Sunday” we prayed for the forthcoming local elections for Runnymede and our many individual wards within our parish. We prayed for wisdom and discernment in our voting; and for those who will represent us locally. Fr Chris got up early to vote before his two-day course at Ladywell Franciscan Centre. Last weekend we prayed for all our new and re-elected councillors in our prayers of intercession. Please keep up your prayers for their work and service. Let us pray that, like Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, they may walk alongside us all and especially the vulnerable. May they make our local environment one of justice, love and care for one another and for all that is entrusted to our stewardship.

MAY – THE MONTH OF MARY

The month of May is one rich in tradition and a beautiful time of the year to honour our heavenly mother…

FULL OF GRACE

“Inspired by Mary, full of grace, we pray for

  • the courage to seek God working in our lives

  • the strength to be attentive to the radical truth of the Gospel

  • the persistence to put our faith, hope and love into action daily in the world

Holy Mary, Mother of God and full of grace, pray for us.”

14th May 2023 – 6th Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

7th May 2023 – 5th Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

It was lovely to return from my break to a huge number of Deanery Confirmations (this year at Arundel Cathedral), there was immense joy and conviction at both the morning and afternoon celebrations. Bishop Richard focused on vocation, and calling, reflecting on “becoming what we are meant to be”. Congratulations to all our newly confirmed, their parents / carers, sponsors, catechists and all who have prayed for them on their journey.

Thank you for your kind “Vocations Sunday” prayers and good wishes. I am passionate about ministry, especially in these changing times. As I write this, I am about to embark on a 48-hour course training in Mentoring, especially Clergy Mentoring. We face (with our parishes) changing times and we, priests and deacons, need courage, conviction, confidence and encouragement as we journey forward in faith.

I seem to be out and about (in the Deanery and Diocese) much more these days, and, especially compared to COVID days, I spend less and less time at home. It was lovely on our St. Cuthbert’s Year 3 Retreat Day (last Tuesday) to welcome the lovely class to the Jurgens Centre, Church and Presbytery Grounds, where we walked our own “Emmaus Walk”! Children love drawing houses, don’t they? Ask a child to describe their home though? Many don’t start with the material elements. They tell you about the people they live with, the things they do in the home and those things that make them feel safe, valued and secure. This is what makes a home a place to value and treasure.

Jesus explains the “Eternal Home” to the disciples. In the uncertainties they face (like us), they are promised the security of eventually sharing in the Father’s House. “Have trust”, Jesus reassures them “Don’t be troubled”. Jesus is returning to his Father (and our Father), but this is not a reason to lament, the disciples (and we too) will have a share in the great generosity of the eternal gifts of God. This is at the heart of our faith! Jesus the way, the truth and the life, leads us to the Father. It is necessary for Jesus to move on, so that the Church can begin its work on earth. What comfort and reassurance as Jesus prepares us a place in that home.

Our longed-for home is not about “things” but about “relationships”. Our relationship with God begins here on earth and we, who profess faith, seek to live out that relationship with generosity, love and trust. We seek to get to know God (through his Son) and to build up our relationship with him in our shared home “the Church”. Fixtures, fittings, colour schemes are important in our worship of God; but love, generosity, forgiveness, compassion and understanding are even more important!

May your love be upon us, O Lord,
as we place all our hope in you!

CONFIRMATION PRAYERS

We continue to pray for all our young people who celebrated their Confirmation at Arundel Cathedral last week. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide you, lead you and have a place in your heart always.

LOCAL ELECTIONS

Last weekend “Good Shepherd Sunday” we prayed for the forthcoming local elections for Runnymede and our many individual wards within our parish. We prayed for wisdom and discernment in our voting; and for those who will represent us locally. As we go to print the results are not known, but by the time you read this our local councillors have probably been appointed! Let us pray for them and like Jesus, on the road to Emmaus, may they walk alongside us all and especially the vulnerable. May they make our local environment one of justice, love and care for one another and for all that is entrusted to our stewardship.

Fr Chris writes:

A priest serves God in many different situations and circumstances. Obedience is important, we mustn’t be self-serving; but looking outward beyond personal goals or ambition. The Diocesan Priest should focus on the needs of parishes, the Diocese and the wider church, filled with hope, energy and joy. As a Diocesan Priest, I ask, “how can I help to bring about the reign of God here on earth”? Vocation promotion is important, as I / we encourage young people to consider their call in this life (whatever that may be) reaching their fulfilment and potential (especially in the way of faith).

Vocations grow first and foremost from the home and family. As Priests we highly value the home and the importance of Marriage and Family Life. Faith needs to be nurtured in the home, through a life of prayer and values, centred on Christ’s teaching. Prayer and sacramental practice begin in the home.

Our Catholic Schools should play an essential role in challenging, encouraging and fostering our young people’s practices, beliefs, and values. They are to encourage our young people (and their families) to be Christocentric. Young people are to have faith in themselves and in God’s ways. Our schools help prepare our young people to “cast out into the deep”! This cannot be wishy-washy but must be ecclesiological, with the church and local parish at its heart and centre, united with the home and family.

Our Parish is to be a parish that prays for vocations, nurtures vocations and models the joy that can come from serving God in the Priesthood, Religious Life or Diaconate (or in any other calling). We all share in the responsibility to nurture that spirit of God calling young people (and some not so young) to some definite service in the life of the Church. It is important for the faithful to value priests, working with them and offering them love, strength and support in the challenging demands they face (especially in these particularly challenging times).

This month, I celebrate 31 years as a Priest. Much has changed in Parishes especially people’s expectations, but at its heart our life remains unchanged. It is centred on prayer, the celebration of the sacraments and the pastoral care of all parishioners. I am still happy to be a priest as I journey with so many wonderful people, bringing Christ’s presence in a variety of ways to all those I meet. Please pray for all priests, in our ever-changing world, and with our increasing challenges, that God will fill us with His strength and power, as we seek to serve him in our weakness and frailty; as well as our strengths, hopes and joys. Thank you for your prayers and support.

The Lord is my Shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

A VOCATION PRAYER

LORD of the Harvest,

BLESS young people

with the gift of courage

to respond to your call.

Open their hearts

to great ideals, to great things.

INSPIRE all of your disciples

to mutual love and giving –

for vocations blossom in the

good soil of faithful people.

INSTIL those in religious life,

parish ministries, and families

with the confidence and grace

to invite others to embrace

the bold and noble path of a life

consecrated to you.

UNITE us to Jesus

through prayer and sacrament,

so that we may cooperate

with you in building

your reign of mercy

and truth, of justice and peace.

Amen

MAY – THE MONTH OF MARY

The month of May is one rich in tradition and a beautiful time of the year to honour our heavenly mother. There is so much we can do to honour this month in the home, individually or with those we live with. We could pray the Angelus, the Rosary or other devotions. We can imitate her (1) her humility (2) her faith (3) her obedience (4) her unceasing prayer and praise (5) her self-denial (6) her purity (7) her ardent love (8) her patience (9) her kindness (10) her heavenly wisdom. Surely, Mary is the perfect model for us to imitate and to assist us in our every need.

30th April 2023 – 4th Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

23rd April 2023 – 3rd Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

Our readings encourage us to truly walk the path of discipleship. In the first reading, Peter boldly proclaims the Good News. The psalm reminds us that God will guide us along the path of life. The second reading explains that Jesus Christ died so we could have new life. And in the gospel, two disciples encounter the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

I remember, in my early years of priesthood, helping to run a Youth Retreat Weekend entitled “Walk in the footsteps of Christ”. We had five sub-themes:

  • The Road to Emmaus: We can recognise, on our journey, our surprise encounters with Christ. We can recognise the risen Christ in unexpected places and unexpected ways. Sometimes people can really help to bring us closer to Christ’s ways and we are called to recognise them and thank God for them. Who has helped me to recognise the face of Christ?

  • Recognising Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread: In our Gospel, Jesus reveals himself to the disciples in the breaking of the bread. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharistic; we are called to be grateful for our recognition and allow ourselves to be nourished and strengthened by Christ who opens our hearts and minds. Why is the Eucharist important to me and how does it help me to open myself to Christ at Mass?

  • Witnessing and Testimony: With faith and hope in God, we are called to be witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus, and to share by the testimony of how our lives have been changed by faith in Him. How do I share, and show, the good news of Christ with others?

  • Discipleship: Christians are called to recognise Jesus in unexpected ways, to share their testimony of faith, to spread the good news of Jesus, and to study and apply the teachings of scripture in their lives. Being a disciple of Jesus involves a lifelong journey of learning, service, and devotion. How am I called to authentic, continual growth and transformation in the Christian faith?

  • Fellowship: We come together communally to this and every Mass. We are nourished by Christ’s presence in the bread and wine (his Body and Blood). We are not called to follow Jesus alone, but to be part of a community of believers who support and encourage one another in our faith. How do I try and make sure my faith is one of fellowship and love, reaching out to others, even those who may see things differently from me? What personal qualities help me to build community?

Lord Jesus, explain the scriptures to us.

Make our hearts burn within us

as you talk to us.

SHOW US, LORD, THE PATH OF LIFE.

23rd April 2023 – 3rd Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

16th April 2023 – 2nd Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

I was cooking my Bank Holiday Supper…there was a ring on my doorbell. It was my local independent councillor canvassing for votes. Smelling the cooking food, he apologised for the interruption. I confessed that I was pleased that it was someone who had come to “offer something”, rather than “ask for something from me” (for I was very tired)! I was filled with hope as he rattled off a list of some of his aims and objectives if elected. As he left, I returned to my meal. As we receive our Eucharistic Meal, Christ comes knocking, may he have a continued affect in our minds and hearts, may the Risen Lord be truly visible and authentic in our faith-filled manifesto – locally, and in the world.

In our Gospel (Jn 20:19-31), Jesus appears before his disciples after his resurrection, and their reactions and level of faith varies! While some believe immediately upon seeing him, others need more convincing. Jesus returns, not to ask more, but to complete his work and mission in a relaxed joy and love, giving his ultimate promise and manifesto – a share in eternal life with God – reached by love, mercy and compassion.

Jesus greets his disciples with the words, “Peace be with you”, and shows them his hands and his side. When the disciples see this, they are filled with joy and belief that he really is the risen Lord! However, Thomas, (famously known as “doubting Thomas”), is not present when Jesus first appears. Thomas is not convinced by the reports of the other disciples and declares that he will only believe in Jesus’ resurrection if he sees for himself and touches his wounds. Thomas was seeking more tangible proof before accepting such an extraordinary claim, and probably not being difficult or demanding.

When Jesus appears again, Thomas is among them, and Jesus invites him to touch his wounds. After confirming for himself that Jesus has indeed risen, Thomas makes a powerful statement of faith and respect, declaring Jesus to be “my Lord and my God”. This moment demonstrates a willingness to seek truth for oneself and to exercise discernment in matters of belief. This is very closely connected to the aims of “Alpha” which will be starting up again in the parish – an open door for all – (come and see)!

Jesus doesn’t seek punishment for the lost or confused but offers forgiveness, purpose, and peace. When Thomas asks for proof, Jesus does not chastise him, but rather offers the evidence he needs to believe. Jesus too, understands and respects us, this is an extension of His love, grace, and compassion. By respecting and caring for all in our world, we too can help to create a more just and peaceful world, based on compassion and love, and the values we profess (the values of Christ).

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,

For his love has no end.

THANK YOU

“Last week we went to print at midweek. This weekend, I would therefore like to offer my sincere thanks to so many, who made our Triduum and Easter an occasion of prayer, reflection and love. Thank you for so many kind wishes, gifts and the Easter Offering. I have received many messages of appreciation for all the hard work so many people put into making our celebrations prayerful and meaningful. Thank you everyone!”

~Fr Chris.

OCTAVE DAYS OF EASTER

Easter is not a day, but an octave. Thank you to all those who joined our Masses this past week. We have kept Easter alive and have prayed for the many needs of our parish and our world. May we journey forward in peace, hope, faith and love. Alleluia, Alleluia.

BAPTISMS

We thank and congratulate Emily Heffernan who was baptised at our Easter Vigil. We thank her family Stuart, Riley and Charlie; and her Godparents / Sponsors Louisa and Becki. It was a lovely celebration of family and faith.

16th April 2023 – 2nd Sunday of Easter – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

9th April 2023 – Easter Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

I would like to wish all our parishioners, visitors, friends and those unable to join us in person a heart-felt “Happy Easter”. We celebrate Jesus, who broke the chains of death and rose in triumph from the grave. This is truly the “Day of the Lord”. But it is our day too, for Jesus shares with us the fruits of victory. Let us open our hearts in joy.

Over the past year, many of us have had to undergo change and disappointments in our lives, and for some of us that has involved sadness or letting go; for some of us difficult decisions, or even moments of anguish or despair. These are like “little deaths”. In these times the world or our locality seem to be so fragile, but we can identify with Christ’s suffering and death.

Even amidst our difficult experiences and bereavements, I hope we have all experienced “little resurrections”. When we know love, acceptance, forgiveness, hope and joy, when we open our hearts to others and to life; then the world opens-up and we emerge from the tomb.

Today we pray that the splendour of our Lord’s resurrection will help scatter the shadows of death, and darkness in our world, enabling us to walk in a new and radiant hope. May our hearts and minds be focused on our lasting joy and hope as we walk towards the Kingdom where there are no more shattered hopes or broken dreams. The good news is that here, in our Parish, we have so many possibilities to open up and allow to flourish, especially for those receiving the sacraments. In our personal lives too, I hope we have celebrations and joys to look forward to as well.

I would like to thank everyone for their help and support over Holy week (I won’t list them all for danger of leaving someone out)! Particularly, I thank those who have “walked the extra mile” with our depleted numbers of faithful servants in many ministries at present.

I would particularly like to thank Fran Thomas who has worked so hard to ensure our liturgies come together and helped with the planning. Thank you in advance for your Easter Offerings, messages, and kind gifts too. We continue to venture forward together as witnesses to Christ’s saving death and resurrection seeking ways to witness locally, nationally and internationally as best we can. Today, especially, we pray for all in our world searching for light, love or peace (especially the peoples of Ukraine, Syria, Turkey and so many more); may we remain faithful in prayer and practical support. May the Church be a living witness to what we profess (in our Faith, Devotion and Prayer), and shine out in our loving Action.

EASTER PRAYER

May the glory and

the promise of this

joyous time of year

bring peace and

happiness to you and

those you hold most dear.

And may Christ,

Our Risen Saviour,

always be there by your side

to bless you most abundantly

and be your loving guide.

BEWARE OF SCAMS!

Please be aware that messages purporting to be from Fr Chris asking for money or assistance are to be discarded. He does not email or message individual parishioners for help!

FOOD BLESSING AND BEYOND

Sharing a meal strengthens our bond of unity and is a time to listen, learn, love and liberate those that we share with. It is a time of light and love, as indeed it was for Christ. Statistics show that “Prayers before Meals” are on the decline. Our Food Blessing (Święconka) on Holy Saturday, shows the great value of sharing a meal together at Easter and it is an opportunity to give thanks for the food, to pray for the hungry, pray for those gathered, and pray for those eating on their own. A spontaneous prayer, your regular prayer, or the following prayer may be of value

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ

be with us this day.

May this meal be blessed

as we gather to celebrate together.

May your love be shared amongst us

as we enjoy the gift of fellowship.

May we remember to give out the grace and forgiveness that you have freely given us,

And may we always give thanks

for your sacrificial love. Amen

9th April 2023 – Easter Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter.pdf

2nd April 2023 – Palm Sunday – Parish of St Cuthbert Newsletter

Fr Chris writes:

No greater love can a man have than to lay down his life for his friends. This week Christ lives out the truth of these words. He took upon himself our sins and the sins of all the world. Who are the people who have inspired me in my faith, by being a true friend to me? Often it is the gentle, the humble, the vulnerable and the poor. Those who show the face of Christ.

If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself daily and take up his cross daily and follow me. The call to powerlessness for the sake of the gospel is our vocation. It always has been and always will be! So many of us and our loved ones feel that sense of powerlessness at this time. We are required to let go of the strings with which we manipulate our lives; and be led rather, “where we would rather not go”.

The Church is, I believe, at its strongest and most united when it struggles. We can easily get caught up in small-mindedness and trivia. Now we are united, not by “what we have”, but “what we have not”. Our vision is both a vision for now (exactly where we find ourselves today amidst the confusion and anxiety); and a vision for the future, nourished by the Word who is Life.

May we rise above the superficial and “dig deep” into the depths of our faith, our lives, our values. For most of us this will be very different this year! Let us not squabble and quibble like the Pharisees of Jesus’ time (about tassels and phylacteries, titles and precedence). Power and status are unimportant. The Christ we follow washed his disciples’ feet and told them that they should be marked out by their charity and love, their humble service and self- sacrifice. So many who humbly serve are at last being recognised, whilst some who see themselves as big and strong are facing a rude awakening!

Today, and throughout this coming Holy Week:

  • may we be in unity with Christ on his sacrificial journey for our sake;

  • may we be one with our parish – unified in faith, walking with Christ.

  • may we recognise that we are a part of God’s Universal Church created for a purpose – to bring about the dignity and worth of all God’s people by our example and love.

  • may we follow the teaching and witness of Christ, who died for us so that we might have new life through his death and resurrection. Let us unite our prayers for all in our world who are suffering or struggling.

With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption

LENTEN PRAYER

Many of us have suffered or struggled, many still do.

If we link our struggles and suffering with Christ,

we become a source of blessing for others,

and we will share Christ’s Easter glory.

Lord grant us comradeship and loyalty,

humility and courage,

generosity of heart,

growth and outreach

to the neighbour we journey with,

and the neighbour we cannot see.

Father, help us to follow Christ your Son

along the road to Calvary

so that we may share in his Easter victory.
